I have an admission which as a woman is something I’m rather ashamed of. I’m in my early (almost mid!) thirties and don’t have a clue about makeup. In fact, skincare generally leaves me cold so I do a very good impression of an ostrich. If I don’t do anything I can’t be doing that much wrong can I?!

Unfortunately, I’ve realised that although I still see myself in my (late) 20s, my skin has moved on, and I recently saw LINES. Not just little faint creases, but whapping great big wrinkles. Laughter-lines? Yes I’m enjoying life but nothing’s been that bloody funny to ‘mark me’ for the remainder of my life. So I have decided to swallow my pride and learn what I can do to fill these cracks.

But here’s the thing, I don’t want to waste a fortune on products, or hours of my life applying layers of the stuff, only to look like Miss Havisham. Nor do I want to go to some teenage ‘expert’ who is going to make me feel stupid and compelled to spend my hard-earned pennies in penance for my skin sin. What I do want is to be able to look in the mirror and recognise the person I see, be proud of how I look and confident that when I want to wear makeup, I know what I’m doing, have the right tools and products for me, and look darned sassy to boot.

So, I decided to bite the bullet and ask the head buyer here at Bath & Unwind, who is also a facialist and skincare consultant, what she thought I needed to do about my makeup phobia. I was rather taken aback when she countered my enquiry with a question about my ‘cleansing routine’. Even though I know, like and respect her, my response resembled that of a naughty child (remember please that I’m now firmly in my 30s!): why!?

My succinct response should have been:

“I use Organic Surge’s cleanser to wash my face when I’m in the shower – this is once a day, but sometimes in the morning, sometimes after work in the evening and if I’ve had a chance to work out in the middle of the day, then I shower then. I moisturise when my face feels like it needs it, using Korres Wild Rose 24-hour Moisturiser & Brightening Cream which I love. Done. That’s it.”

Digging a little deeper, I confessed to horror of horrors, having suffered from acne on my face, chest and back (the sort which means you can’t lean back on a chair for pain), which I’ve recently figured out is entirely hormonal. Funny since I was on the pill to help control it!

Since figuring this out and coming off it, I reckon my skin would now be classed as combination, (it’s sometimes dry, sometimes oily and sometimes completely breaks out), and generally has a mind of its own. I used to be very blonde (but not much time in the sun recently sees this as a figment of my imagination!), and I have fair skin which burns quite easily. I also reckon I have sensitive skin, but I’ve recently read that so do 58% of us ladies, so who knows on that score.

Emily very gently and considerately suggested that she could help me develop a personal cleansing routine to develop a good base for any makeup we discuss at a later date. I guess this means my thoughts that doing nothing wasn’t doing much harm was slightly off! But, whilst I will admit to being clueless about makeup and now skincare, I do want to do something about this.

I don’t want to keep discovering crevices on my face – I’d much rather look in the mirror and be proud of what I see, whether I’m wearing makeup or not. So, I’m about to start on an adventure of discovery. Who knows what will happen, but I reckon the state of my bathroom cabinet will never be the same again, and quite frankly I find this highly exciting!

Step 1 – facial with Emily to discover the truth about my skin and what a cleansing routine should look like… wish me luck!

I love grapefruit

I have half a grapefruit for breakfast every morning. My Mum does the same, her Mum did the same and I think even her Mum (my Great Grandmother who lived until 104!) did the same. It’s in my DNA.

In fact my husband is so aware of how much I like grapefruit he even stuck a candle in one for my birthday breakfast last year. Weird to some, but grapefruit has actually been proven to have several health benefits and can be a great aid for weight loss.

But it doesn’t just work wonders when you eat it. It’s also a brilliant addition to any beauty product and here at Bath & Unwind we sell loads of gorgeous goodies that include my favourite extract.

Here are my top 5

1) This Works Daily Boost Body Scrub

The grapefruit in this body scrub not only makes it smell gorgeous but it helps decrease water retention.

2) Elemental Herbology Body Wash

This is a really refreshing body wash and the grapefruit works with other citrus oils to help purify the skin.

3) Love & Toast Sugar Perfume

Mmmmm, it smells soooo sweet! Plus it’s completely free from chemical nasties. And the profits go to charity!

4) Decleor Hydra Floral BB Creme

There are quite a few BB creams on the market these days but this one contains grapefruit extract which works to refine the skin.

5) Burts Bees Refreshing Lip Balm

Pink grapefruit is my favourite and this lip balm not only softens my lips but smells so good I have to resist licking my lips!

If you don’t have a grapefruit addiction already, trust me you will after trying these!

World Foot Health month is upon us, the sun is out (hurrah) and that means the spotlight is focused firmly on our feet. I wouldn’t mind betting that after a long hard winter stuffed into boots and socks we’re not all in a big hurry to whisk them out! Feet often get a little neglected but a few simple steps can make a real difference to how they look and feel, and that’s something we’re really in favour of.

Not sure where to start? Well not to worry, the experts at Margaret Dabbs have given us a simple foot-care plan to help you get your feet in tip top condition.

The golden rule

ALWAYS FILE YOUR FEET WHEN THEY ARE DRY. It’s really important, not least because it will make the results last longer. If you attempt it on wet skin the file won’t grip properly and you’ll find it harder to identify the areas you want to tackle. Skin is also much weaker when it’s wet so you risk damaging it or even causing it to tear (ouch!).

If you have lovely clean and dry feet then proceed…

Prepping your feet

Remove any nail varnish from the toes (which, if you’re anything like me, might have been there since your last holiday!). Acetone free varnish removers are the best as they’re gentler on the nail.

Cut your toenails straight across – this makes it less likely you’ll get a painful ingrown nail – and then use a file like the Margaret Dabbs Crystal Nail File. Work it across the ends of the nail, filing in both directions if you want, but keeping the line of the nail straight across.

Next up, add a little serum (such as Margaret Dabbs Nourishing Nail & Cuticle Serum) to each nail and cuticle and allow to sink in. Remove any excess product to ensure your nails are ready for buffing.

Filing and buffing

Using a file like the Margaret Dabbs Superior Foot File is really effective to target dry areas like the heels and slough away dead skin (trust me, I’ve tried it). Be careful not to file away too much as a layer of skin should be left to protect new skin underneath.

Now it’s time to buff your nails. Make sure the nail is totally dry and use the green side of the Margaret Dabbs Super Shiner Buffer to seal the nail. Then use the white side to get a high-shine effect – the more quickly you buff the more dramatic the result will be.

And now for a little TLC…

Now your nails and dry skin have been addressed your skin is ready for some nurturing. Spray each foot with one or two pumps of oil, like Margaret Dabbs Intensive Treatment Foot Oil and work in until it’s completely absorbed.

Follow with a lotion, like the Intensive Hydrating Foot Lotion (a small amount will suffice because the product is so rich) and allow to sink in.

Adding some decoration?

Your feet are now sandal-ready, but if you fancy adding a splash of colour to your nails then remember these handy hints: make sure there is no oil left on your nails, use a base coat to prime your nail before adding two layers of your favourite polish and then seal it with a top coat once dry.

Finito!

Follow the plan once a week and your feet will be fighting fit and ready to carry you right through summer.

Obviously the Bath & Unwind team love bottles, pipettes and tubes of luxurious lotions and potions. But sometimes, you can’t beat a bit of good old nature to leave the hair, nails and complexion glowing. Sometimes actually, you can’t beat a bit of good old nature for delicate problems either… ladies, let’s be honest, we’ve all been there… cranberry juice and yoghurt can ease a multitude of problems, and save us awkward blushes.

Natural Wonders of the Beauty World

Stir ground linseed powder into things like curries, chilli con carnie and pasta sauces to up your fibre intake and to help detox the body. Hazel

I eat almonds as much as possible as they’re naturally high in calcium and are a great source of protein. I have them on their own as a snack, as almond milk on my cereal and even use almond butter (think peanut butter style) on my toast. Yum yum! Anna

If you get really nauseous after a few too many cocktails, mix a heaped tea spoon of powdered ginger with a generous squeeze of lemon into a cup of boiling water and sweeten if desired. It really settles the stomach. Olivia

An apple a day… Annick

I’m a bit obsessed with getting super-fresh nutrients and love juicing up 2 apples, 2 carrots and a thumbnail sized piece of ginger every morning. You need to drink it within the hour to make the most of all the goodness, but it really helps with energy levels, calming your tummy and has bonus sparklyskin benefits. Francesca

Manuka honey not only tastes great, but is a brilliant antioxidant. Ria

I read once that Cindy Crawford swears by rubbing coffee beans mixed with a little olive oil into her thighs before a shower. Caffeine applied externally is amazing for lessening cellulite. Well, if it’s good enough for a Supermodel… Sam

I’m a big fan of the honey and aspirin mask – it’s brilliant for calming sensitive/reactive skin. Also, beer rinse to make hair shiny… but I usually drink it before I get the chance. Lizzie

Soak a clean face cloth in a bowl of whole milk, wring it out and carefully drape the cloth over your face for about 5 minutes. Carefully wipe away any residue. Milk contains lactic acid, a natural exfoliator for the skin. The fat in the milk also hydrates and soothes. Emily

I recently caught up with Ido Leffler, founder of natural brand Yes To, in order to find out more about the company and their interesting use of fruit and vegetable ingredients. The staff at Bath & Unwind HQ are big fans, especially as there is a range to suit everyone, from sensitive to spot prone, and for babies to us more… mature types.

Who are Yes To?

Founded in 2006, Yes To, Inc. is a global leader in natural skin and haircare, with awesome and affordable products made with fruits, veggies, and a smile! Yes To‘s award-winning formulations are over 95% natural, have proven results and are free from parabens, petroleum and SLS. We offer unique collections, including products for face, body, hair, lips, and even babies…to allow people to create their own natural ‘recipe’ that works for them.

We are a fun-loving, wine drinking, yoga doing, active-life-living bunch of folks in San Francisco who:

Create affordable natural products that really work

Give back by planting school gardens for kids to help teach them about healthy living and nutrition, and

Have a pretty awesome time doing it.

So join us and say YES to naturally good products…with unnaturally good results!

What inspired you to start the brand?

We were looking for a way to be healthier and as part of that we wanted to find natural beauty products. At the time we did not find anything that met our needs. We were Virgin flying, Mini driving, Apple using individuals and we wanted a natural brand that embodied the values, style and substance of the companies that we loved. Before we knew it we were exploring the world to find the best formulations to create the most positive natural beauty brand!

Why are natural ingredients so important to you?

Yes To products are blended with organic fruits and vegetables combined with a wide array of efficacious and clinically proven ingredients. These recipes give your skin a powerful dose of nutrients, vitamins and skin soothing ingredients which are gentle but effective. We’re also completely free of parabens, petroleum, pthalates and SLS so you’re safe in the knowledge that you’re putting natural, healthy formulas on your skin and hair. And the best benefit of using Yes To products is that they’re totally ‘guilt-free’ – the price is accessible, the products make you smile and they actually work!

Do natural ingredients really give good results?

Natural skincare treatments have been shown to be gentler and less irritating on your skin. Using products with naturally derived ingredients is a good way to have a very clear sense of what you’re putting on your skin. When using products with harsher chemical ingredients you run the risk of skin irritation and unforseen reactions.

The industry is moving in a direction of simplification, which is great for consumers. The more knowledge we have about the products we use daily, the better! We believe that the more ingredients we can use that people recognise (carrots, tomatoes, green tea, apples, lemon peel…the list goes on!) the better. We aim to make Yes To products accessible to all consumers and our ingredient lists are a great place to start.

Yes To company mission – “We believe in making sustainability a way of life – in our products, our partners, and the way we live our lives as a company and as people…we want to make the world a better place, one jar of lotion at a time.”

We love your company mission - how do you and your company manage to maintain a greener and more sustainable way of life?

Sustainanably-minded office, with 75% of the team walking, biking or taking public transport to work. Our team is a health-focussed group, with an awesome mix of yogis, runners, vegans, home chefs and explorers!

We choose recyclable materials in our packaging wherever possible, and all formulas are at least 95% natural

We give back through the Yes To Seed Fund helping plant gardens for kids in the US and Africa. Our team takes this ‘green’ mentality to heart and makes excursions to local gardens to volunteer.

Which Yes To product can you not live without?

That’s a hard question, but… I love the Yes To Cucumbers Facial Cleansing Towelettes, Yes To Blueberries Serum and Yes To Carrots Body Butter (I could go on…!)

What’s coming next for Yes To?

Yes To have just launched a wonderful new collection in the US (coming to the UK and Bath & Unwind later this year!) – Yes To Grapefruit, which is made with powerful fruity acids to naturally even skin tone and to help reduce hyper-pigmentation, correct skin damage and enhance skin’s natural radiance. The entire collection is formulated to help correct and repair skin from damage due to acne scarring, sun exposure and age spots.

Thanks Ido for answering our questions. We can’t wait for Yes To Grapefruit to launch on Bath & Unwind later this year, thanks for the preview!

When a brand discontinues a product that you totally love, it is inevitable that the quest for a new favourite will soon begin. A couple of months ago, my favourite makeup remover and cleanser were discontinued. After I had turned the house upside down looking for any bottles with a couple of uses left (and then sat on my bathroom floor trying to cut the top of the bottle off to get one more use), I decided it was time to find a new favourite (bah humbug).

Here are a few reasons why I was reluctant to experiment with new makeup removers and cleansers:

I am a creature of habit

I have very dry skin and sensitive eyes

I wear a lot of makeup (mainly mascara – which is known for being a pain to get off).

So, in a nutshell, my new makeup remover has to be tough and gentle at the same time, it can’t dry my skin out and it has to be as impressive as my old favourite.

With all this in mind, I tried a few different cleansers but I was always left with a little nagging disappointment, for example it hurt my eyes, or it took too much scrubbing to get my mascara off, I didn’t like the smell – you name it, I found a problem with it! That was until the Caudalie Gentle Cleansing Milk and Toning Lotion was put on my desk by Anna. I don’t usually use a toner, so I was a little reluctant to take these home to try them as I thought they would probably just go to waste in my bathroom. But I am so, so glad I did!

The cleanser has such a light, pleasant and refreshing smell that it really invigorates you during your morning shower. In the evening, it is really effective at removing all my eye makeup, yet so gentle that it doesn’t even slightly sting my eyes. After I have finished cleansing, I then go on to use the toner and I am always shocked at how well it finishes cleansing my skin – even if I am sure there is not one bit of makeup or dirt left on my face – it always just manages to take that extra little bit off. I now see why using a toner is such an important step between cleansing and moisturising.

After I had already started to fall in love with these, the Caudalie Foaming Cleanser and Divine Oil also appeared on my desk, so naturally I had to give these a go! I have only used these a couple of times, but I am so impressed already. The Foaming Cleanser is so light, is effective at removing my makeup and leaves my skin feeling clean but not tight – it really is a pleasure to use.

The Divine Oil is such a light, fragrant moisturiser that I think it is perfect for those days when you feel like your skin needs a treat. It leaves your skin feeling so moisturised and is a good all rounder – you can use it on skin, nails, hair – and even in your bath (I think I might have to try that sooner rather than later!).

A massive bonus for me is that they are natural products so I know I am putting no nasties on my skin. I think it’s safe to say I have definitely become a Caudalie convert – and I am already looking forward to the next lovely product I discover from them!

That annoyingly skinny and perky girl from the gym showers with them. Those hip celebs ease the mind with them after a particularly deep Kabbalah/Scientology session. The carrot-cake eating, coffee-lunching Primrose Hill set bathe their children in them.

I’m talking about organic and natural beauty products.

These bad boys are no longer relegated to the realms of vegan die-hards and yoga gurus. Rather, they have crossed the divide, bridged the gap between slathering mashed banana onto your face, and injecting unpronounceable science-y ingredients into the skin.

Modern health and wellbeing addicts want dermatologist-approved results, whilst keeping products as close to how nature intended as possible. Yes, it seems like having our (unprocessed) cake and eating it. But now we can. Yes, it seems too good to be true. But now it isn’t. Believe you me, we know… we didn’t quite believe the hype ourselves until we went over to the dark side…and never came back.

Our must-have natural products

I dilute in in water and dab it on spots as it is a good anti-inflammatory. I also use it on small cuts after cleaning with water to help skin heal. Oh, and I dab it on my dog’s collar to keep the fleas away!

Brilliant for my super-sensitive and eczema prone skin. Equally, anything with aloe vera in it is ideal for calming redness and irritation quickly. Natural and organic wonder brand Jason has its own aloe vera range.

This is my best buddy when it comes to multi-tasking. It deals with my twin bugbears of dry hair (it adds a lovely silky sheen) and dry skin (I slather it on my legs and arms at night). I also use it as cuticle oil and as a subtle alternative to perfume because it smells of amazing grapes (there’s a terrible song in that somewhere).

Lucas Paw Paw

Although we don’t sell it on Bath & Unwind (yet!), I love this all-rounder. I apply it to lips, burns, dry elbows and my daughter’s bottom when I change her nappy!

This year so far seems to be the year for scientific research based beauty discoveries. I keep coming across new products with a wealth of complex information behind how they work. I don’t really need to know the science; I’m mostly interested in whether or not they work as well as they claim, but I can’t help but find the science fascinating. So, for all of you who like to know a little more about how products work, read on and discover the secrets behind the latest development from Nuxe.

Each cell of the body is like a factory and needs energy to function and it is the mitochondria within the cell that produces this energy. Mitochondria have their own DNA which is not protected and is very vulnerable to free radicals, UV light, pollution and stress. This can alter the DNA of the mitochondria resulting in less energy for the cells so their functions slow down. If your skin cells have less energy they produce less keratinocytes, melanocytes and fibroblasts and this shows on your skin as a loss of radiance, and sagging skin with fine lines and wrinkles.

Your cells also have receptors at their surface, but their numbers are reduced with a lack of energy so the cell becomes less receptive to active ingredients in any skin treatments you may be using.

Nuxellence works to prevent damage to mitochondrial DNA, giving your skin cells renewed energy and giving you more radiant skin. Your skin also become more receptive to treatments, doubling the effect of your anti-ageing moisturisers and serums.

You can use Nuxellence on its own or with your favourite moisturiser for added benefits. You will get at least 4 months use out of one bottle as you need just one pump for your face and neck. Apply morning and/or evening and enjoy the benefits of a natural product, developed in line with the latest research.

I think I have an addiction to natural tinted lip balms. I didn’t realise it until I counted the number of lip balms on my desk this morning (violating our clear desk policy at the same time!). I may have many, but I really do use them all; they each have a slightly different shade and texture and I love them for different reasons.

My newest addition is by Yes To and was a sneaky preview of their brand new range of Colour Balms. This one is Rosy Bloom and although subtle, is perfect for me, as I like just a hint of colour. The texture is really creamy and moisturising and I love using it when I have dry lips – which is most of the time.

I have a soft spot for Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balms – I have two: Red Dahlia and Hibiscus. Hibiscus is a lovely subtle pink I wear during the day, and Red Dahlia is a deeper red, perfect for a night out. Like Yes To, the Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balms are really creamy and great to use if you suffer from dry lips like me. You won’t get that horrible effect of colour finding its way into the cracks of your lips.

Another Burt’s Bees purchase of mine is their Lip Shimmer in Peony. The added peppermint oil gives a refreshing tingle and I love the light shimmer it gives.

My collection wouldn’t be complete without a little something from Korres. I always keep a pot of Korres Lip Butter in Pomegranate in my desk drawer. I love the colour, but although the texture is fairly moisturising, it is a little drier than my other balms so I save this for good-lip-days or use it with a touch of Jurlique Love Balm for extra softness.

Ever since Bath & Unwind began trading nearly nine years ago, we have learned that what’s in the products you are putting on you skin is an important issue. From alcohol to TEA and parabens to PEGs, the last decade or so has seen a rise in awareness that the ingredients contained in your favourite beauty products may not be the best thing for both you and the wider environment.

But with words like ‘organic’, ‘natural’, ‘ethical’ and ‘green’ being used to describe anything from coal to financial products, what does it all really mean for the products you buy at Bath & Unwind?

Organic and natural certification bodies

Organic farming is the cultivation of plants, crops and livestock without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, artificial growth hormones, antibiotics, additives or genetically modified organisms. Instead, it uses crop rotation, green manure, biological pest control, careful matching of plant/animal breed to the farm location and other techniques to ensure a viable yield.

This may be one of the easiest standards to apply to products, as there are a range of bodies concerned with organic certification. Perhaps the best known is the Soil Association, a UK charity that, along with four other European certification bodies, has developed the Cosmetics Organic Standard. This specifies that to get organic certification, 95% of a product’s agricultural, aquacultural or wild collected ingredients, and 20% of the overall ingredients, be organically grown.

In addition to this, the rest of the ingredients must still meet strict criteria to ensure they are not damaging to health or the environment. If a product contains 70-95% organic ingredients, the Soil Association allows it to state it is made with xx% organic ingredients. Products with under 70% organic ingredients are not certified at all.

Similarly, the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program will give a product an organic seal when it contains at least 95% organically produced ingredients. Any product made from 70-95% organic ingredients may state it is ‘made with organic ingredients’.

The last main certification body we looked at is Ecocert, which has specialised in certification of organic agricultural products since 1991. Again they specify that a product must have a minimum of 95% organic plant based ingredients (and 10% overall by weight) to be awarded their natural and organic label. They differ slightly from the Soil Association and USDA as they also have a natural only certification label; to be eligible for this, a product must have a minimum of 50% organic plant based materials and minimum of 5% organic ingredients overall by weight. Consequently, more cosmetics companies have products that reach Ecocert’s natural criteria.

Our decision

With many brands labelled ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ in the title, this can be a confusing issue for our customers so, having researched the various criteria for the bodies mentioned above, and taking into consideration customer feedback, we have decided on the following:

Organic – for a product to be tagged as organic on Bath & Unwind, it must contain a minimum of 70% certified organic ingredients (excludes water, salt and clay which cannot be certified organic)

Natural – this was a harder thing to decide on, as ‘natural’ is a word with various definitions. We have decided that to qualify at Bath & Unwind, a product should contain over 60% naturally sourced ingredients, must not be tested on animals, must not use synthetic fragrances, colourants, silicones, phthalates (DBP), and paraffin and other petroleum products, and must have recyclable packaging.

How will you know?

We are currently working on a project behind the scenes to tag every single product we stock with a variety of attributes, ranging from their packaging type (bottle, spray, pot etc) to product formulation.

There is also a set of attributes concerned with ingredients, including organic and natural. Once this work is completed (hopefully in the next 3-4 months), we will improve the product page so you can filter products by these attributes. (Want a travel size shampoo, suitable for curly hair, that doesn’t contain parabens? No problem…)

Are natural and organic products best to use?

Most ingredients, whether naturally derived or synthetic, can have an adverse effect if you are allergic or sensitive to them, which is worth bearing in mind when trying new products. As for the wider environment, there are those who argue organic farming is kinder to the plants and animals, and ecosystems in general.

All of the products at Bath & Unwind have been carefully selected; we would not be selling any products we are not proud of. Now, with our new natural and organic standard, you can make more informed decisions about what you buy.

“I can’t because I have sensitive skin”

There are so many times I have heard and used this phrase throughout my life. The latest glittery bubble bath my friends were using….the must-have fake tan that girls swore by…those amazing face washes for teenage spots…none of it I could use as it would effect my eczema VERY badly. Endless trips to the doctors and never-ending antiseptic cream prescriptions would result in me never branching out into trying other products. I was scared, confused and wouldn’t even bother to look at the label unless it was a big tub of plain, white cream. Plus my doctor told me not to!

Then I thought enough was enough. I hated the fact the one thing I would change about myself was my skin. I had to learn to love and appreciate it, not hate it. Your skin is, after all, the biggest organ of your body so it’s important to cherish it. My low self-esteem was bothering me as I knew so many women like to use luxury products to pamper with. Advertising and magazines are always luring us into trying things. So, because of my background and the fact I was now working for an amazing beauty website, the time had come to venture out!

From past trips to the pharmacy, I had a pretty good knowledge of what particular ingredients to look out for in various beauty products. So here I will share with you what sensitive wonder-products I have discovered since being here and which ones have literally changed my life! I will also cover some natural ingredients worth making a note of if, like me, you suffer from sensitive skin.

Face

I admit, for my face, I used to only use cheap, sensitive skin wipes to take my makeup off and just pure water to wash. I always used to think that if I used products constantly, it would irritate my skin more. Luckily, I don’t suffer too badly on my face with eczema. However, usually when the weather changes or it’s quite cold out, my skin becomes very dry and red patches appear. Then I was introduced to the wonder of hot cloth cleansing. This method of cleansing is so soothing for your face and doesn’t feel harsh or irritable. I have been using Emma Hardie’s Amazing Face Lift & Sculpt Moringa Cleansing Balm. This stuff is SO good! It literally does what it says on the tin…leaves your face feeling amazing. Just use a pea size amount, rub a little water with your palms and apply all over the face. Then using a damp, warm cloth, wipe it all off your face et voila! A fresh, clean complexion. With natural ingredients of moringa seed extract, jasmine, rose and vitamin E, this beautiful balm will brighten your skin and help minimise those pores.

On the other hand, if you can’t be bothered some nights and just want to use something quick and easy, I thoroughly recommend Nuxe Micellar Cleansing Water. A lightweight, alcohol-free cleanser that eliminates impurities and traces of makeup in a single step. Job done! As advised by my doctor, I always try to choose products with as little alcohol in as possible. The more alcohol, the more reactive the product will be to gentle skin.

“The more alcohol, the more reactive the product will be to gentle skin”

After washing your face, it is important to restore the skin’s moisture by using a day cream. For me, it also calms down any redness I have. A gorgeous brand Ren was launched recently and I was so excited to hear they had a range dedicated to sensitive skin. I tried the Hydra-Calm Global Protection Day Cream and instantly fell in love. Not only did it feel luxurious but also absorbed really quickly. I hate wasting time in the morning waiting for any cream to absorb, especially before putting on any makeup. As a base before my foundation, I love to use Bare Escentuals Prime Time as a primer. I use the tiniest amount, rub it in and then use a sponge to apply my foundation. It has changed my makeup routine drastically and doesn’t give me that ‘caked on’ feeling. I can never go back now since using this, so beware, you will love it. For your foundation, try to use a hypoallergenic product to reduce any allergies and something that feels lightweight. You don’t want products to feel heavy on top of that dry skin.

Body

The idea of a body scrub used to make me shiver. I never thought I could exfoliate my skin without that harsh reaction or the feeling of something scratching my skin off! When I was given this Gureande Salt Exfoliating Body Balm by Ren, I admit, I was apprehensive. But then I smelt it and the overpowering peppermint scent made me think ‘this might actually work’. It’s quite a weird product to use as you rub it straight onto dry skin before a bath or shower. However, when it rubs off, you are left with such soft skin you won’t even need to use a shower gel. It’s simply amazing.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. It is highly important to do this if your skin is dry and dehydrated. I often alternate between two types of moisturisers so my skin doesn’t react as much. I use a fragrance-free, alcohol-free one nearly everyday (like First Aid Beauty Body Moisturizer) and then when I want something with a little more fragrance, I use something natural with no nasties. Korres is also a great brand as all their packaging includes a useful label showing exactly what ingredients are/are not in them. I use their body milks as they absorb quickly and leave a luxurious smell.

Hands

My hands are terrible. Literally, awful. Because I wash them so regularly, they react and I need to keep them moisturised constantly as they are very dry, old lady hands! So, as you may have guessed, I have copious amounts of hand creams around my flat, in my handbag, on my desk – everywhere. The two I always keep coming back to are Barefoot Botanicals SOS Rescue Me Face & Body Cream and Cowshed’s Cow Slip Hand Cream. As a natural health winner, I couldn’t resist trying the Barefoot Botanicals cream. It is recommended for eczema, psoriasis and seriously parched, distressed skin as it contains therapeutic herbs. Also pure essential oils help calm skin with a relaxing aroma. I often find that if aloe vera is contained within a product, it will most likely calm any itching or redness I have, so keep a look out.

“I often find that if aloe vera is contained within a product, it will most likely calm any itching or redness”

Lips

And finally for my lips, I religiously use the Nuxe Reve de Miel Baume Levres Lip Balm. This extremely nourishing and repairing fragrance-free honey lip balm contains no preservatives or artificial scents and has no sticky effect, leaving lips supple and soft. Acacia honey and shea butter nourish and intensely repair any cracked areas. I also use daily Korres Lip Butters, which leave a tinted finish. My favourite is the nude shade Jasmine.

I hope this has helped any other confused and apprehensive people looking for everyday products and if you have any other questions or need more advice, our excellent customer care team are always here to help.

I’ve become a bit of a mask addict of late, and recently had the pleasure of trialling a new spa facial mask from the relatively new brand-on-the-block Astalift.

Launched in 2012, Astalift was THE brand of year. Created by Fujifilm, (yes the same company that produces your camera!) Astalift uses a naturally occurring antioxidant called Astaxanthin in all their products to shield skin against the daily environmental damage that can cause and accelerate visible ageing – and it is this that gives all their products their signature red colour.

This Astaxanthin, alongside collagen, is broken into the smallest micro particles to be used in skincare to ensure that the goodness of these products can be fully absorbed into skin, leaving it protected, supple and luminous. Those who have already tried their cult Jelly Aquarysta Rejuvenating Concentrate will back up these claims and will be just as suitably impressed by their new moisture mask.

The Astalift Intense Re-Plumping Moisture Mask comes as a serum-infused fabric mask in two sachets: one for your lower face, and one for your upper face. Now the problem most of us usually have with fabric masks is getting them to actually stay on your face, which is the first thing that differentiates the Astalift mask from others. Thanks to the the elastic qualities of the fabric, you can stretch the lower mask over your lips and lower cheek area, before doing the same with the other half of the mask, which stretches comfortably over your nose and forehead area. The fabric stays in full contact with your skin even whilst walking about the house. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop you looking a tad scary whilst wearing the mask (see the video below) so make sure the kids are in bed!

The mask is absolutely saturated in Astalift Firming Serum, more than your face could possibly absorb in 10 minutes of use. However, as our Astalift rep Julie explained to me, do not leave it on for any longer - after 10/15 minutes, the fabric mask actually starts to re-absorb the product from your skin, therefore drawing all the lovely moisture and goodness back out with it. Instead, after the allotted time, I removed the mask from my face and placed the lower half over my neck area for 10 minutes, rubbing any remaining product into my skin, and over my arms and legs.

And the result? Super plump skin! This mask delivers seriously impressive results after just one use. My skin was left looking even, clear and amazingly ‘springy.’ In fact, I couldn’t stop poking my cheeks, such was the delight in seeing them spring back to their newly firm selves, (yes, really!) and insisted that my colleagues did the same the next day at work. This would be an amazing mask to use the night before any big occasion, such as a wedding, to make sure you look healthy and glowing the next day- although the fantastic results did easily last a week, so I would recommend adding it as a regular treat to your usual skincare regime.

Astalift Intense Re-Plumping Moisture Mask is available as an individual mask, or as a pack of 4. It is also included in their new Radiance Boosting Trio set which makes a great introduction to the brand, or a gift for a loved one.

I’ve just joined the Bath & Unwind team and it’s the end of my first week. I must say it’s just as lovely here as I imagined it would be. On my first day I was given an amazing welcome by the team. Everyone was so kind and friendly and had even put together a drawer full of product samples for me to take home and try. I used the Caudile Vinosource SOS Serum that night and by the next morning I was already addicted. It somehow transformed my dull, dehydrated skin to velvet, and even my husband noticed a difference.

But it’s not just the people and free samples that make the place so nice. There are gorgeous NEOM candles burning around the office, making the environment very calm and relaxing. And in the kitchen, the coffee machine and Pukka tea selection put some of the best independent coffee houses I know to shame.

So, at the end of my first week I think it’s safe to say that I’m going to be very happy here. Watch this space for more blog posts and musings from me.

P.s. The link to ‘my husband’…obviously only in my dreams…(sorry Tim!)

Here at Bath & Unwind HQ, we were really excited about the launch of Ren on our website. And the minute a selection of products came into our office we were all dying to try everything out! So – without further ado – here is what we thought of the products we tried.

Jojoba Microbead Purifying Facial Polish

“This is a really gentle exfoliator, and although it feels very thorough in removing makeup and dirt at the end of the day, it is very gentle, as the beads (which do not scratch at all) are suspended in a cream. The result is perfectly cleansed skin without any of the dryness or soreness you can sometimes get. Also, it smells great!”

No. 1 Purity Cleansing Balm & Omega 3 Night Repair Serum

“The Omega 3 Night Repair Serum is quite thick and oily which really suits my skin as I am not prone to oily breakouts at all. I use this overnight – and it also absorbs very quickly.

I also love the Purity Cleansing Balm, as balms really suit my skin type and work well with the hot cloth cleansing method I am addicted to. I am impressed with how big the tube is – it will last for ages, which is good because I am naughty and I never use it sparingly! It leaves my skin feeling really clean and not tight at all.”

Rosa Centifolia Cleansing Gel

“This rose scented facial cleansing gel for normal skin is definitely in the running for my favourite daily facial cleanser – I was very surprised by and pleased with the results. One pump of the clear gel is more than enough, and when mixed with water it creates a light lather. The rose scent is lovely and light, and most importantly, not overly perfumed. Maybe the best outcome for me was that this face wash did a great job removing all my makeup and left my skin feeling clean, but not tight at all. I will definitely keep using this, and solidly recommend it.”

Gureande Salt Exfoliating Body Balm

“I absolutely loved this. I have always been nervous about using exfoliating products or scrubs because my skin is so delicate but this was different. I loved the smell instantly. It smells strongly of mint so is really fresh (ideal for the morning). It’s quite strange and weird to put on before getting into the shower as you’re putting it straight onto dry skin. Once it washed off though, it melted straight away and left my skin silky smooth. I didn’t even have to use another showergel or moisturiser! I would recommend this for someone who likes firming products as it would be great for bums and tums! And also for people with sensitive skin who are afraid to use rough scrubs.”

Hydra-Calm Cleansing Milk & Hydra-Calm Global Protection Day Cream

“I love this cleanser. Usually my face goes a bit pink and warm when I use a new cleanser but this one didn’t have that effect at all. It leaves my skin feeling clean as well as hydrated and has made my skin clearer. I found the day cream leaves my skin hydrated and absorbs well, however I think I will use it as a night cream instead of a day cream.”

Moroccan Rose Otto Body Wash & Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil

“The Moroccan Rose Otto Body Wash is delicately fragrant (great if you hate overpowering scents) and not drying at all thanks to the lack of astringent foaming agents. The complementary bath oil smells lovely and disperses easily in bath water, leaving no oily residue. I also rubbed it into my damp skin after the bath to help the scent last longer as again; it’s quite a delicate fragrance, and personally, I like quite a strong floral scent. Both left my skin feeling hydrated and calm.”

Neroli & Grapefruit Body Cream

“Hand-on-heart, this is one of the best body creams that I’ve ever tried. It’s a weirdly wonderful hybrid of cream, lotion and mousse. If you find that normal body butters sit greasily on your skin, and yet lotions don’t deel hydrating enough, then this is the one for you. It glides on like a cream, sinks in like a lotion and hydrates like a butter. Perfection. Oh, and it smells of Parma Violets (or Purple Rain cocktails if you’re that way inclined!).”

My name is Laura and I’m a product hoarder.

As you can see, a small (okay maybe quite a large) chunk of my wages go on skin and haircare goodies every month. From perfume to body lotion, cleanser to moisturiser, foundation to nail polish, you can be sure I have (at least) three of each to choose from!

But which ones will I be buying again? Below, I have reviewed five products that have really impressed me and that I will definitely be staying loyal to.

1. Nuxe Micellar Cleansing Water

Okay so hands up… who finds the process of taking off your makeup, then cleansing then toning then moisturising boring? If so, let me introduce to you this cleansing water by Nuxe. I only brought this because the cleanser I usually buy was out of stock and I was running dangerously low, and I am very glad that I did.

Firstly, not only is it a cleanser but also a makeup remover (bye-bye face wipes). It does not need rinsing (yes, you can do this whilst you are in bed) and if that wasn’t good enough, there is no need to tone your skin afterwards! Let me explain. Basically whilst cream cleansers wipe away the dirt from your face, and a toner removes any dirt that is left, micellar cleansers suck it all up in one go. It is also gentle enough to use around the eyes and lips so no need to worry if you wear mascara and lipstick. Need I say anymore?

2. Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream

I have already written a blog about Dr. Hauschka but I think this day cream deserves another mention. I have tried lots of other moisturisers since and none have come close. This thick, creamy, luxurious cream is designed for someone who has dry skin but can be used on nearly every skin type.

It was voted Dr. Hauschka’s 2012 Peoples Hero Product, was a Beauty Shortlist 2012 finalist, is 100% natural, and is one of our bestsellers at Bath & Unwind. Read our customers reviews here.

3. Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Extreme

I must admit, at first I didn’t LOVE this product. I put that down to the fact that when I first tried it I had extremely damaged hair, (we are talking about hair that was coming out in my fingers damaged.)

Now my hair is healthy again I can really appreciate the results I get from using Elasticizer Extreme. Just apply a small amount to damp hair before shampooing, rinse it out, wash and style your hair like normal, then swish your hair about… you will feel like you are in an advert. This really will make your hair stupidly shiny like you see on the TV!

4. Green & Spring Rich Night Cream

Up until recently I was a night cream virgin. This was because I tend to use such rich day creams I figured I could just use them at night as well. Then, at our Give & Make Up sale I saw this and thought it was a great excuse to give night cream a go.

Firstly I want to say, this cream smells gorgeous. The first night I used it, I was literally sniffing my bed sheets and my hair, before I remembered I was trying out a new product on my face! Secondly, the texture did not disappoint. It is lovely and thick, yet it absorbs into the skin wonderfully. Lastly, I found a noticeable difference in the condition of my skin the morning after using this. It always leaves my skin feeling soft, pampered and very well looked after. So, I think it’s safe to say that I was wrong about night creams. There is a point to them, and I think this one full of British ingredients is divine.

5. Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant

This is the product that I can’t live without. I have been using it since I was young because my gran (who is also obsessed with beauty products) always used to give me this from her value gift set. I often get dry breakouts on my face and I find nothing more comforting then rubbing Eight Hour Cream all over it. This all-purpose cream is mainly used to soothe chapped, cracked and dry skin, although it works wonders on your lips (chapped or not) and helps ease minor skin irritation, including sunburn. And one tube of this will last you well over a year even if you use it as often as I do.

If you have any questions about any of these products feel free to send me an email at laura@2tlimited.com where I will be happy to help you further. Happy shopping!

As a graphic designer, it was interesting to see where the brand originated and I knew it was important to know these characteristics to portray the designs correctly. Not only did I get to try a variety of products, they greeted us with a tour of the spa and I felt a great, British vibe from the place; I knew that was an important aspect of the brand itself…that they were born on British soil.

Most of all, I loved their quirky, humourous moods for the variety of products they make, each keeping with their own unique flavour. Their main 6 ranges are as follows:

Knackered Cow

For when you feel you need to wind down and relax, the Knackered Cow range is for you. It contains nurturing ingredients such as lavender and eucalyptus. Eucalyptus is an aromatic plant known for its excellent therapeutic properties, and lavender has potent powers to help aid sleep, so you’ll have no problem forcing those eyes shut. Lavender acts as a natural calmative so it will also help soothe any irritable, dry skin. I have used the Knackered Cow Relaxing Bath & Shower Gel and it is a lovely, soft gel that absorbs quickly, leaving a herbal smell. Not as foamy as other showergels but perfect for a calming soak. I would recommend using this range after a tiring day to help relieve any stress.

Moody Cow

This range is all about balance. If life throws you off the edge and you need to be restored and put back on track, look no further! With luxury ingredients including rose geranium, linden blossom and frankincense, you will hopefully feel like yourself once again. This is also a pure mixture of calm and cheer to help mend your mind for when you’re feeling low. Try the Balancing Room Diffuser to create that calming mood for when you walk through the door.

Grumpy Cow

No doubt, my favourite range. This fruity-flavoured scent really helps pick you up in the morning! With overwhelming senses of mandarin, petitgrain and grapefruit, you couldn’t want more to get you uplifted with that spring in your step. I was given a travel size Grumpy Cow Uplifting Body Lotion and loved the scent straight away. It’s zesty, fruity and heavily scented but most importantly 100% natural with no nasties. For someone who is so sensitive, it’s very hard to find something with a strong fragrance but can still use it on the skin. Grumpy Cow Uplifting Bath & Shower Gel is most certainly on my wish list!

Horny Cow

This is quite a popular range (I wonder why…) with alluring essential oils including rose absolute, patchouli and spicy cinnamon. These are used to create that romantic mood and give that added boost of confidence in your self-esteem. Light a candle, add a touch of perfume and grab that sexy, black number. C’mon, we all have a cheeky seductive side sometimes!

Wild Cow

If you’ve woken up on a high and are ready to face anything, you want to keep that positive mood going! Moody Cow helps you do that. With lively ingredients such as lemongrass, ginger and rosemary, that positive energy should stay with you. I’m not saying this will answer your prayers if something happens on your way (problems at work or a bad hair day!) but these herbal fragrances should keep your nose happy. Bear in mind, this is quite a strong scent so a little goes a long way. Keep a room fragrance at your desk and give it a good spritz every now and then!

Lazy Cow

A bit like Knackered Cow, this soothing collection is to aid the mind and give that much needed therapeutic action. If you are feeling a tad restless, nervous or suffering with anxiety, then this range might help you. With beautiful, luxury scents of jasmine, chamomile and sandalwood, you are bound to feel that little TLC. Use a some Lazy Cow Soothing Bath & Massage Oil to nourish the skin with vitamins, minerals and almond oil. Oh, and a phone call or hug from a friend will always help!

So…which moo’ed are you?

One in every four women experience domestic violence at some point during their lifetime. Sometimes, it becomes so horrific that they have no choice but to flee their homes with little more than the clothes they have on their back, and sometimes their babies and children.

These are truly terrible situations, but there are some fantastic organisations out there (such as Women’s Aid and Refuge) that are dedicated to helping women in these situations. These organisations offer a safe place to stay, essentials such as clothes and food and, most importantly, support. However, these organisations also need support, often in monetary or goods donations. This is where non-profit initiatives come into help, such as Give and Make Up.

Give and Make Up‘s sole purpose is to get toiletries, cosmetics, and heath and beauty products into the hands of people who need them, people who have had to suddenly up and leave their homes. We all know how a nice hot bubble bath and a fresh coat of nail polish can make you feel a hundred times better when you aren’t quite feeling yourself and this is what Give and Make Up‘s aim is – to help women feel themselves again. And this is where we come in!

Working in this job, we end up with many products in our office every day. Having so many products in bottles and jars, accidental damage is inevitable. Sometimes the pump on a bottle will pop off or a product box will get a bit squashed – these kinds of damages mean that these products aren’t quite perfect any more, but they are still very much usable. However, it would be such a waste to throw these products away or to just leave them to live in a box at Bath & Unwind HQ.

This is exactly why we have teamed up with Give and Make Up! I take our damaged products and split them into two categories – ‘daily essentials’ and ‘beauty’. All the ‘daily essential’ items are donated straight to Give and Make Up, and the ‘beauty’ products are put up for sale for the staff at Bath & Unwind to buy – the money from this is then given straight to Give and Make Up. This means Give & Make Up get a monetary donation to help keep them going, and products to give to the women who need them after leaving everything they own behind.

If you have any new or used products you would like to donate (please check out Give and Make Up’s website to see what they are after) then get in touch - Bath & Unwind HQ is now the drop off/collection point for the South West. So you bring us the products you would like to donate, we collect it all together and arrange for it be picked up by Give and Make Up.

So, if you are inspired to have a beauty drawer clear out and find anything that you would like donate (don’t worry, you can donate products that have been lightly used!), then drop me an email at charlotte@2tlimited.com and I’ll be able to help you.

So go on everyone – Give and Make Up!

Melanie and I were lucky enough to recently meet international makeup artist Karim Sataar and have a sneaky preview of his new Dear Eyes… makeup range for Dr Hauschka. He very kindly offered to give us a makeover to show us the versatility of this new range, and here are the results.

Karim always starts his makeovers by making a quick assessment of your skin tone, eye and hair colour, and the colour and style of the clothes and jewellery you are wearing to get an idea of the perfect look for you. For Melanie, he decided she would suit a romantic evening style, and myself a more casual daytime look.

Karim began by applying a touch of concealer to Melanie, covering any small blemishes and shadows. Her skin is so clear the lucky girl didn’t need foundation as well. He then enhanced the top of her brows using Dear Eyes…Kajal Eyeliner and added a touch of brown mascara to her top lashes. This was followed by a generous line of Kajal Eyeliner to the top eyelids which he then smudged up to the crease of her eye socket for a smoky look.

The next product used was the fantastic new Dear Eyes…Eyeshadow Trio Palette. Karim added a touch of pearly rose to Melanie’s inner eye lids and blended it into sparkling nude applied under her eyebrows. On her cheeks Karim used Rose Rouge Powder. He then added a touch of Rose Eyeshadow to her lips to give a hint colour – a little tip to save money, Dear Eyes Trio has multiple uses!

He finished off the look with a gentle spritz of Facial Toner to seal her makeup in place.

For my daytime look he started by preparing Porcelain Translucent Makeup on to the top of the product lid, which he then applied using a stipple brush. This gave a beautiful flawless base without being too heavy.

On my eyes he chose to use the Kajal Eyeliner. He started working from the crease of my eye lids, which really began to define my eyes and I saw an instant difference. Using the smudge side of the liner, he then evenly smudged the colour out onto my eyelids. He then used a Soft Brown Kajal Eyeliner to define my eyebrows, working from the natural top line of the brow across to give lift.

He chose to use the Volume Mascara to define my eyes and chose a black colour. To give me blushed glowing cheeks, he used a few dabs of Warm Red Lipstick from his palm onto my cheeks and followed this with Sparkling Nude from the Dear Eyes…Eyeshadow Trio.

He finished the whole look with the Novum Lipstick in Nature Shimmer for my lips. As I have defined lips, he therefore did not need to use any liner.

We were both very impressed with the Dr Hauschka makeup range, and the variety of looks you can create with it. Look out for new makeup products coming this year specially designed by Karim.
