The roles and responsibilities of women changed dramatically during the first half of the twentieth century, and a new kind of femininity was born from the strong females entering the work force, particularly those involved with the war effort. Arden recognised this shift in society and staying true to her personal mantra, “to be beautiful and natural is the birthright of every woman”, famously launched Elizabeth Arden Montezuma Red Lipstick, a shade specifically designed to match the red of the uniforms of women serving in the armed forces.

 In addition, beginning with collaboration with chemists in producing one of their first face creams, Elizabeth Arden revolutionised the cosmetics industry by bringing a scientific approach to the design of products. This has continued to the present day, with research and development identifying the ingredients that will make products evermore effective and beneficial to use.
